Ball Sort Tips & Strategy
Before moving a ball, check what sits underneath it and where that next color can go. Grouping matching tops helps, but a good move also gives you room to reach the colors buried below.
What is the trick to ball sort puzzle?
Look one layer deeper than the ball you are moving. If moving yellow reveals red, find a legal home for that red before committing. Otherwise you may simply trade one blocked tube for another.
Choose a color whose balls you can reach, then check the landing places for everything above them. A color with three exposed balls can be a useful starting point, but its fourth ball may still be trapped beneath colors with no available destinations. Count those moves before filling your last empty tube.
This is a planning habit, not a single trick that guarantees every level. The rules also matter: our ball game moves one ball per turn. If your app transfers a whole same-color run, use the water sort strategy guide to account for that larger move.
Use empty tubes to uncover something useful
An empty tube accepts any top ball, so it gives you options that a partly filled tube cannot. After you put green in it, it accepts only green until you remove that top ball. Decide what the placement will uncover and how you will recover the space.
Try to keep an empty tube available when you can. Sometimes a solution uses both spare tubes temporarily; that is fine when the next moves consolidate a color or empty another tube. “Never use the last empty tube” is too rigid to be a general rule.
For a buried ball, count legal landing places rather than just free slots. Three free spaces under a red top cannot receive a green ball. In a four-ball tube with three balls above the color you want, you need destinations for those three balls in the order they become exposed.
Finish reachable colors, without locking yourself out
A full tube of one color is finished. In our browser game, completed tubes are left alone; other apps may still allow you to move balls out of them. Check your app before treating a finished tube as permanently locked.
Completing yellow reduces the number of mixed tubes you need to track. It does not create an empty tube by itself. You gain an empty tube only when you move its last ball out. Aim for a sequence that both finishes a color and clears a mixed tube when the board permits it.
A worked opening: uncover red by collecting yellow
This three-color position has four balls of each color and two empty tubes. Read each tube bottom to top. The symbols identify red as 1, yellow as 2 and green as 3.
- Tube 1 → Tube 4: yellow starts an empty tube and exposes red.
- Tube 2 → Tube 4: the other exposed yellow joins it, revealing green.
- Tube 3 → Tube 5: green starts the other spare tube, revealing red.
- Tube 3 → Tube 1: red joins red; green is now exposed in tube 3.
- Tube 3 → Tube 5: green joins green, exposing yellow.
- Tube 2 → Tube 5: green joins that pile and exposes red.
- Tube 3 → Tube 4: yellow joins yellow and leaves tube 3 empty.
After these seven moves, you have an empty tube again. Tube 4 holds three yellows, tube 5 holds three greens, and the remaining reds can collect in tube 3. Load the starting position in the ball sort solver to explore the whole solution, or follow the complete 13-move example in the rules guide. That guide uses blue in place of yellow; the arrangement and moves are the same.
The useful part of the opening is the sequence of reveals. Both spare tubes are occupied briefly, but you can trace a route to empty tube 3. This is why looking ahead works better than judging every move by how tidy the board looks.
Does every ball sort position have a solution?
Our game checks each starting level for a solution. That does not mean every position you can reach from it remains solvable by forward moves. If all promising routes stop, undo to the last branching choice rather than repeating the same transfers.
In another app, check the capacity, move rules and any locked or hidden balls. A level number alone is not enough to identify the arrangement. For a visible-color puzzle, copy the current board into the ball sort puzzle solver; include empty tubes and fill the colors from bottom to top.
“No solution found” means this tool did not return a solution within its search limits. It is not a proof of impossibility. Check that every used color has the right number of balls, that no tube is reversed, and that your app uses the same rules before drawing a conclusion.
Players have raised both the general-strategy question and the problem of getting stuck in this ball sort discussion. The example here gives a concrete sequence to test those ideas.
Ball sort strategy cheat sheet
Keep this beside the board. You can print the page or save it as a PDF using your browser's Print menu.
- Check the destination: empty or matching top, with space for a ball.
- Name the reveal: what color sits under the ball you are about to move?
- Plan the landing: where can that newly exposed color go?
- Spend space deliberately: if you use the last empty tube, trace how you will clear another.
- Avoid loops: shuffling a uniform pile between empty tubes usually changes no useful options.
- Undo a branch: go back to a choice, rather than restarting after every setback.
- Check a stuck board: use the solver with the actual arrangement and matching rules.
